Freak Nation
One of my favourite shows, on television about ten years ago, was Dark Angel. The story of a genetically created human being, Max, who escaped from the secret government agency Manticore. The show dealt with Max trying to live the life of a real human being, while all the time looking over her shoulder for fear of being captured and returned to the laboratories. The show ended prematurely, with the whole transgenic population escaping from Manticore to Seattle. This first page is my written version of the epilogue scene to act as an introduction into this Dark Angel Fan Fiction (Fanfic).
“But you haven’t won anything.” Lieutenant Clemente said, staring at Max, “This is gonna get real ugly, and this is way over my head now. These people’s lives depend on the decisions that you make right now. I pray you make the right ones…Max.”
The detective returned back to his car and pulled the door closed. The driver reversed back, and soon the police car was following the remainder of the Seattle Police Department – back outside the fences of Terminal City.
Mole was the first to speak, circling the group of transgenics as they gathered in together, relaxing a little after the tense scenario.
“Escape and evade! We divide up into teams, pick an azimuth, and go to ground!” Mole shouted, ready to disperse the troops.
“No!” Max said firmly, “We stay here.”
Mole glared at her. “In a couple of hours, that perimeter will be completely locked down. Tanks. National Guard. Every cop within a hundred miles.”
“We’ll be digging our own grave, Max.” Dix chimed in.
“Mole’s right.” Luke added, “If we move now, they’ll never be able to catch us all.”
“Where are we gonna go?” Max said, striding around, looking not only at Mole, Dix and Luke, but at the entire population of Transgenics who had made Terminal City their home for the past few weeks. “I can’t stop anyone from leaving, but I’m through running, and hiding, and being afraid! I’m not going to live my life like that anymore! Aren’t you tired of living in darkness? Don’t you want to feel the sun on your face? To have a place of your own where you can walk down the street without being afraid?
“They made us, and they trained us to be soldiers,” She continued. “To defend this country. It’s time for them to face us and take responsibility, instead of trying to sweep us away like garbage. We were made in America, and we’re not going anywhere!
“So they call us freaks; who cares? Today, I’m proud to be a freak, and today we’re going to make a stand, right here! Who’s with me?”
Max raised her fist in the air, and started looking around at the faces of those who were her family, those who had been made with her. No one moved, until Joshua lifted his hand, followed by Logan, and then Alec. Slowly, the entire crowd gathered together, lifting their hands. All of them stared at Mole, who kept his hand down.
“What the hell.” Mole said, with a smile on his brown features, before lifting his hand also.
- So the finale of Dark Angel left the situation. A tense truce between the Manticore Transgenics, and a member of the Seattle Police Force. With Police and the National Guard standing watch around the perimeter of Terminal City, Max and the other transgenics had their decisions to make. They decided to stay, to stand firm for the rights that they deserved as much as anyone else.
As the flag for “Freak Nation” lifted high above Terminal City, for all of Seattle to see as they passed by, what steps were to be taken in the future?
